Civitella Roveto

Description

Civitella Roveto is located along the Liri river, inside the mountain range of the Cantari, and it is surrounded by secular chestnut trees. It is one of the biggest towns of the Roveto Valley. The first settlements date back to the 11th century, when the town was still called “Petrarolo”. The town used to be a feud of the Colonna family, and this is why it used to host the governor and the curia.

Nowadays the town has a population of more than 3,000, and it is divided into two parts: the upper area is full of narrow streets and it hosts the museums; the lower area, instead, hosts commercial activities and gathering points.

Around the small streets you will find the aristocratic palaces, the Domasnea garden, as well as the Auta spring, built in 1844, and that every autumn hosts an important food festival entirely dedicated to the Roscetta chestnut, the typical chestnut of the Roveto Valley.

The patron saint of the town is Saint John, to whom is dedicated the church of the XV century located in the historical center of the town. On the dawn of the 24th of June it is still celebrated an ancient ritual that attracts thousands of visitors from the entire territory.
