Collarmele
Come into Marsica and discover the beating heart of Abruzzo

Collarmele

Description

Collarmele is without doubt the greenest town in the area, thanks to its strategic position between the national park of Sirente Velino, the Maiella Park, the natural reserve of Monte Salviano, and the national park of Abruzzo. The town also deploys wind farms and photovoltaic panels.

During the Roman Age, Collarmed was a fortified settlement, and it was called “Collis Armelis”. The town was destroyed by invaders, and got back on its feet during the 17th century, when it was ruled by the Piccolomini family: the new rules transformed the hamlet and enriched it with important structures such as the sanctuary of Madonna delle Grazie.

In the 19th century, the town prospered thanks to the railway, but then the 1915 earthquake destroyed the most ancient part of the town and damaged the newer one, then later it was completely rebuilt.

During the years, Collarmele managed to preserve its strong points, like for example the Norman Tower, built in the 13th century right after the Battle of Tagliacozzo and used as a watchtower. Be sure not to miss the permanent nativity, the sanctuary of Madonna delle Grazie, the church of Santa Felicita and the green area of the town with paths running through the protected areas.
