The Monicella Olive has been cultivated for century on the border with Lazio region, in the area of San Vincenzo Valle Roveto. Some giant trees show how long this olive has been present on the territory. It is a robust plan, adapt to the fresh climate of this area. Growing olives trees here is “difficult”, yet all the trees are extremely health: this is because this particular climate represents an obstacle to the growth of bacterias and fungi that could damage the plants. This makes it easy to produce bio-olive oil, since there is no need for particular treatments.
This variety is grown by some small local farms that consume the oil on site. Unfortunately, the number of young producers is constantly shrinking, mostly because many of them are discouraged by the many difficulties represented by the hills that make impossible the use of some mechanical tools.
The Monicella of the Valle Roveto Association promote the safeguard and the development of this peculiar cultivar that yield a high-quality extra virgin olive oil, characterized by a golden color with green specks, a mildly fruity flavor with a subtle almond aroma. It has a bitter aftertaste that remind of artichokes and it is packed with antioxidants and phenols, both extremely important for our health.
It is an oil with a strong taste that should be more known.
