Celano’s gorges are one of the most-loved natural spots in Abruzzo. Here you will find an amazing canyon embedded inside the central Apennine, between the towns of Celano, Aielli, and Ovindoli. It is the ideal place for trekking and hiking.
In some points, the stunning stone walls that form the gorge are extremely close – just 2 meters – and they can reach be 200 meters high. There is a 500 meters difference in height between the peak of the gorges, located at 1300 meters, and the exit. Beside the variegated flora, here you will get the chance to meet several stunning animals, like squirrels, boars, griffons, peregrine falcons, and owls.
The path, that starts from an unpaved service area, leads to what is famous as the “Lover’s Spring”, where waters flows following the shape of the rocks. Here you can stop briefly before reaching the evocative remains of the monastery of San Marco delle Foci. The hike then ends near the Arano Valley, on the border with the southern plateau of Ovindoli.
