An Homage to Silone in Milan

From November 22nd to November 27th, at the Teatro Oscar will be held the show “Fontamara”, adapted from the famous Ignazio Silone’s novel, directed by Francesco Niccolini. Original score by Giuseppe Morgante, directed by Antonio Silvagni, featuring Angie Cabrera, Stefania Evandro, Alberto Santucci, Rita Scognamiglio, Giacomo Vallozza. The show is produce by the Teatro Stabile d’Abruzzo with the support of Lanciavicchio, the Silone Award, and the city of Pescara.

“I am coming back to Fontamara for the first time after 35 years,” said Francesco Niccolini. “At the time I was 15, but the strength of the three main characters of Silone’s novel never left me. His style so simple yet full of dignity and humiliation, the irony behind his writing, the cruelty of the powerful… The privileges of rich people, their greed, the mocking of a world doomed to see a genocide. Because it was indeed a genocide, but at that time I couldn’t understand it. 20 years ago I was lucky enough to work with Marco Paolini and Gabriele Vacis to the “Tale of Vajon”, and one of the most difficult chapters to study and, yet, an example of courage and moral strength, was the prosecution’s closing argument, written by Sandro Canestrini –now 94 years old – who made a small book out of it, an authentic pamphlet, with the title ‘Vajont: the genocide of the poor people’. So, when I come back to Fontamara after so many years, after travelling and meeting so many people, I think that this masterpiece it’s another fundamental chapter for those who have decided to tell this story. Now, together with Antonio Silvagni and the ‘oafish actors’ – as they call themselves – from the Teatro Lanciavicchio, I want to bring these voices, these ghosts on stage.”
